Test 3 – Section 9
Pg552-Q1
If a diver dives to more dangerous depths we know he is descending (B). We also know he is swimming (A), but because the sentence states that the depths are “more dangerous” it would not support the idea that the potential for injuries would be less (lessening) which is what answer A is suggesting so that answer will not fit. Divers would not be removing to more dangerous depths therefore answer C is not a good answer. Answer D might sound like a possible answer but not a best answer choice and does not give the sentence its true meaning since there is a mention of dangerous depths we have to assume that the result would be an increase in potential for diving injuries, not just seeing the potential for diving injuries. Climbing does not support the idea of a diver who is going to more dangerous depths, so answer E is also not a good answer choice. The divers are descending deeper and increasing the potential for injury.
B
Pg552-Q2
If John is a habitually boasting then he would be considered egotistical (B). Erratic means inconsistent or irregular. Flexible means bendable or adaptable. Tactful means polite. Inconspicuous means not noticeable.
B
Pg552-Q3
Based on the structure and context of the sentence we are looking for words to describe someone who is “steadfast in his beliefs” and “tactful in his negotiations” and “respected”. Glancing at the word answers we can immediately see that diplomatic (D) would fit the description of someone who is tactful in his negotiations so answer D is a possibility even if we do not know the meaning of the word resolute (D). Resourceful means imaginative; and courteous means polite. Those word answers do not really fit the description of someone who is steadfast or tactful. Tenacious means stubborn and manipulative means scheming. Tenacious could be a possibility for someone who is steadfast but manipulative is not a good choice for someone who is tactful. Therefore answer choice B does not supply the meaning we are looking for or fulfill the idea of the sentence. Determined means the same as tenacious so it could possibly be used to describe someone who is steadfast in their beliefs but the second word choice, demonstrative, means affectionate which does not describe someone who is tactful. So that rules out answer choice C. Resolute (D) means unwavering which when substituted for steadfast truly fulfills the meaning of the sentence. Outspoken (E) means frank or honest and indiscriminate (E) means haphazard. Answer E does not fulfill the meaning of the sentence. He was respected because he was resolute and diplomatic.
